CLINICAL PRACTICE AND SUPERVISION COURSE

This is a supportive year as the student starts taking his/her own cases and starts building their practice. Except for the two required seminars, this is an essentially non-lecture, clinically based format. This year is primarily about the student analyzing cases and taking live cases under supervision. It deals with relevant issues such as case taking and analysis, starting a practice, and case management. It will feature live as well as paper cases and will provide an opportunity to discuss with your peers and supervisors issues that arise in practice. This is a very interactive year.

The curriculum for this course is primarily based on the CHC's requirement of an additional 500 hours of clinical training in order to qualify to take Phase II of the certifying examination. This curriculum has been tailored to fulfill those requirements. Consequently, the course is divided into 3 categories: 150 hours of case Observation, 200 hours of case Analysis, and 150 hours of Full Responsibility.

Note: The division of hours are guidelines only. There can be less hours in the Observation and more in the Analysis and Full Responsibility categories but never less than the recommended in the Full Responsibility category. Nor can the final total be less than 500 hours.

1) Observation - Up to 150 hours can be credited for the observation of cases taken by other homeopaths certified by the CHC, CCHC, NASH, ABHT, OR HANP. This includes, written, video, and/or live cases presented in schools, clinical programs or seminars. You are not expected to do analysis, remedy selection or case management, only to observe as these are done by an instructor or mentor.

The TIH 3 year course graduates will already have 100 hours in this category that they obtained during the 3 year course. The remaining hours will come from two seminars which will be mandatory. Non-TIH graduates will have to submit proof of other methods for fulfilling these 100 hours, e.g., seminar attendance, apprenticeship, or additional computer cases.

2) Analysis - An additional 200 hours must consist of cases that you have analyzed under the supervision of a homeopath certified by CHC, CCHC, NASH, ABHT or HANP. These may include written, live, or video cases. You are responsible for the case analysis and remedy suggestion, though the supervising practitioner still remains responsible for the case, final remedy selection, contact with the patient, and all matters of case management.

This requirement will be partially fulfilled by the student completing the following computer interactive case analyses:

a) Homeopathic Symposium - 10 chronic cases

b) Homeopathic Tutorials - 5 chronic cases and 5 acute cases
The successful completion of the analyses of these cases will result in 80 hours of credit. The TIH graduates will be credited with an additional 120 hours in this category because of their case analysis work during the 3 year course. Consequently, non-TIH graduates will need to submit proof of an additional 120 hours of case analysis study.

3) Full Responsibility - AT LEAST 150 hours of clinical training must be cases that you have taken, analyzed, and managed under the supervision of a homeopath certified by CHC, NASH, ABHT, or HANP. You may have all 500 hours in this category but there may be no less than 150 hours. These must be LIVE cases YOU have taken where YOU are responsible for the clinical assessment, case taking, case analysis, remedy, selection, follow-up, and all patient interaction under the direction of your supervisor.

This requirement will be fulfilled by the student in two ways.

a) Outside Supervision - 50 hours minimum. The student must videotape 5 cases. The videotape must be duplicated and mailed along with the student's write-up to an assigned supervisor. The Supervisor will review the tape and the write-up and then contact the student to schedule a one hour phone conversation to discuss the case taking process as well as the student's conclusions regarding assessment, analysis, remedy selection, and potency. This case must be followed with the Supervisor through two follow-ups.

Note: As this is a very individualized process, depending on the student's knowledge and previous experience, the expense for these 5 cases is not included in the tuition. The student must make their own financial arrangements for this portion of the curriculum directly with their Supervisor. However, the TIH will provide a list of approved Supervisors and has contracted with them for advantageous hourly rates.

IMPORTANT - Because of the very nature of this portion of the program, the student may earn considerably more hours than the 50 hours assigned. This is the MOST IMPORTANT PART of the program and consequently, can reduce the hours needed from ALL other sections of the program.

b) In-House Supervision - 100 hours. The student will be required to submit 10 additional chronic cases. They must be written-up in the form suggested by the CHC but are not required to be videotaped. They will be monitored by a TIH supervisor.

Assessment
Assessment will be based on the student's competence pertaining to all aspects of case taking, case analysis, rapport with patients, and case management. For students showing difficulties in certain areas, additional cases and/or studies might be required before completing this year.

Time Limit
The course must be completed by August 31, 2005. No extensions will be granted.
